If you had $10,000 and could buy any two cars with it, what two would you choose?
To make this more interesting, you're lower-middle-class and the combined fuel economy of the cars has to be above 20 average.
My two choices would be a 1994 I6 Jaguar XJS hardtop and a NA Mazda Miata.
The Jaaaag would be the daily driver with its four seats, luxury, and head-turning looks. The I6, so I've heard, is an uncharacteristically reliable engine, and if it dies a 350 swap is easily accomplished (or, for fuel economy, perhaps a Buick 3800Series II supercharged).
The Miata is for AUTOCROSS BRO (hoosiers, bro). Probably make it a wildly impractical (but still street legal) autocross monster on a budget. Would be fun.

Miata + CVPI

My current Honda Accord and a track-ready 1986 Toyota Celica.

Volvo 240 wagon and C4 Corvette.

Good choices. You could spend $9900 on the corvette and pick up a Volvo for $100

Well I already have my MR2 so I'll cheat and just add a ST185 Celica. One day...

One is easy - a Boxster.
Two? Probably the most Volvo XC70 I could buy, and the most Saab droptop. For a grand total of 9 cylinders.

Jalop as fuuuuck.

I have 3 cars so does that mean I have to get rid of one?

I had this going on a few months ago. Just have the miata now:(
![]() 11/27/2014 at 13:11 |

I figured $5000 for some sort of OK ones that need a little loving to get back to normal. More jalop points that way. Dang it, i want an old Volvo and C4 now lol

I bought my 72 Cutlass for $100
and my 79 Wagoneer for $1800
and my 06 Suzuki S40 for $1200

That is a glorious combination though.

W126 (preferable 560SEL) and Isuzu Trooper. Ask me again tomorrow and it will be different.

Take out the Taurus and insert this:
A Regal GS. That would be it.

Summer: 1991 Chevrolet Caprice 1A2 Special Service Wagon (1A2 on a wagon = 9C1 on a sedan).
Winter: 1989 Ford Bronco XLT.

The ultimate autocross car for that budget is an E36 M3 breh . . . . .

1993 Sonoma single cab, short box w/ 2.8L V6, 5-speed, RWD w/ 65,000 miles: $3800
1985 C4 Corvette manual w/ 100,000 miles: $6,000
I probably don't meet the 20 MPG requirement, but I could actually buy both of these on Craigslist right now.

cheap BMW E36 M3 as a daily driver for $6.5-7K
and
a cheap NA Miata to work ok for $3-3.5K

Keep the Panda to daily, old beat up Alfa Spider to tinker with/ occasionally drive on weekends when it's running.

Lifted N/A impreza or Forester and an E30 of sorts.

Audi S4, for $6,500
Porsche 944, for $2,450
OH Wait! What's that? $1,050 for something else?
Ninja 250 for $1,000 even. And it could fit between the 944 and the S4. Also, balances out the fuel economy nicely.

I would get two luxury cars, a Cadillac Seville STS for the cruising and taking my friends to wherever, and a Lincoln Mark VII LSC for the fast track days and the fun occasions.
![]() 11/27/2014 at 13:54 |

$10,000 = £6400
(23+35)/2 = 29 MPG (UK) = 25 MPG (US).

I would totally do this, wagon on mb though
![]() 11/27/2014 at 14:11 |

$2000 efficient reliable wagon of some sort, $8000 downpayment on a C6 Corvette.
If I'm lower middle class, I can make payments
![]() 11/27/2014 at 14:13 |

Wholeheartedly disagree. Miatas are always the best autocross car until you can buy a C5Z

Mine was given to me but people with wagons on Craigslist around me are asking a lot for them.

Not cheating, what I would/will actually do.

An early 2000's Mercedes S500 and a vehicle I already have. 03 F150 2wd extended cab V6 that was my dad's and will run forever with some care and keeping it away from the salt. Probably doesn't meet the mpg limit but maybe on the hwy. Who cares. Gas is cheap and you won't have any car payments. Plus there's nothing like sitting on the tailgate of a truck after some hard work.

This MCSS, $1k.
A new-edge Mustang GT: $6,000
Honda Grom (technically cheating) - $3,000

I believe in the impractical. A deuce M35 and a C4 Corvette. And to make it 20 mpg combined, im submitting that the deuce is the multifuel variety, I will just dump veggie oil, used ATF, and anything that burns into the deuce. Ecofriendly.

Weirdly my choice would also be a straight six XJS, albeit paired with a Nissan Laurel 2.8 Diesel for ultimate reliability and fuel economy.

I don't drive it nearly enough - it takes me to work every once in a while, when the sky is clear. It's rust free, and I'm trying to keep it that way. It's still a work in process - pwr steering rack is shot, and time for new shocks - but it's the best looking car cover holder I've ever seen!
Yours is a DD? How's it holding up?

4.0l jag inline 6 in a 95-96 XJS - bulletproof.

its been solid only had to replace an alternator, springs, a fuel pressure regulator and replace the belts and engine gaskets
it has its common old car problems of leaking and consuming a bit of oil and a few squeaks and the like
but i mean i bought it two years ago for $2300 and only expected it to last like 6 months

WRX Wagon and a 5.0 FB RX-7.
![]() 11/28/2014 at 04:18 |

Not as bulletproof as a japanese 2.8 single cam non-turbo diesel, and definetely much less fuel efficient.

At the moment it would be a GTV6 and a Sprint-engined spitfire, but it changes so often between the top 10-20 or so cars that I really like that I couldn't tell you...
Other options are these:
